Sometimes you just want to record a conversation. Maybe because you don't want to take notes during that important call. Or because you want to listen back to see if you really said ‘yes’ to those weekend plans. But can you use your iPhone to record a phone call?
The answer is: yes, but not automatically. Apple doesn't make it super easy, but there are some clever ways to make it happen. We list them for you.
Way 1: Recording with Voice Recorder - oldschool, but gold
The fastest way? Just use the Voice Recorder app already on your iPhone. You'll find it in the ‘Services’ folder (or just search for ‘Voice Recorder’).
Here's how to do it:
- Open Voice Recorder.
- Press that big red record button.
- Put your conversation partner on speaker.
- Start your phone call.
- Done? Press the red square to stop.
You now have a recording! Bonus: you can cut it afterwards, edit it and save it to iCloud. Simple and free. Just be sure to turn on that speaker, otherwise you'll only hear yourself.
Way 2: External apps for recording - if you want just a bit more
Want something more professional, or does the Voice Recorder not work the way you want? Then you can get started with external apps. There are many, but these three do their job well:
TapeACall
The classic among call recording apps. Usually works flawlessly, but can sometimes falter after a major iOS update (Apple doesn't like eavesdropping 😉 ).
✔ Record incoming and outgoing calls
✔ Transcribe (for those who like everything in writing)
✔ Archive and search your conversations
TapeACall isn't free - you need the Pro version for the full experience. But you can try it for free.
iOS Sound Recorder App
This app is a bit like the Voice Recorder, but with a modern twist: you can easily edit recordings, create loops and record conversations via a “conference setup”.
Note: you do have to pay for this within the app.
Google Voice
Do you have a Google Voice account? Then you can make calls via your laptop or PC. During the call, press 4 to start recording. Another 4 to stop. Nice and simple.
Keep in mind: the other person will not be notified that you are recording. So use this responsibly.
Way 3: Making a recording with Skype - retro but reliable
Do you use Skype? Then recording is a piece of cake. During a call, tap the menu and choose ‘Start recording’. The other person will get a notification. So no secrets. Great for interviews or podcasts.
Are you allowed to record a phone conversation?
Yes. In the United Kingdom, you are allowed to record a conversation if you participate in it yourself. You do not have to tell the other person that you are recording (although that is of course the proper thing to do). Companies have different rules - they often have to report it.
Frequently asked questions about recording a phone call
Can I listen back to a conversation after it has been recorded?
Not by default. You need to set up the recording in advance using one of the methods above.
Does the other person know I am recording the phone call?
Only with certain apps such as Skype. If you use Voice Recorder or another app without notification, the other person won't know.
What is the best app for call recording?
TapeACall is one of the most popular - constantly updated and lots of options. For simple audio: just Voice Recorder.
Why record conversations?
For evidence, reminders or just to hear something important again. Useful for interviews, for example.
